Um fyrirlesturinn
This paper presents selected results from my ongoing PhD project “Domestication and resource utilization in northern Iceland – a zooarchaeological analysis of three farm midden sites in the Eyjafjörður area”. This project is part of Work Package 2 (WP2) of the Two Valleys project, funded by Rannís grant of excellence (no. 1392-1393102).
Presenting zooarchaeological data from two of the three sites discussed in my dissertation, Staðartunga farm in Hörgárdalur and the church farm site of Miðgarðakirkja on Grímsey, I will compare patterns of resource use and subsistence strategies employed at the different sites.
Through inter/intra-site analysis of zooarchaeological data obtained, analysed, and synthesised as part of the thesis work, this paper aims to address existing gaps in the dataset from Hörgárdalur, and to provide the first zooarchaeological analysis of archaeofaunal materials from Grímsey. By studying the economies and the different sites, it considers whether these farms functioned independently or were part of greater trade networks. It also considers if any changes over time can be linked to major historical events, such as the arrival of Christianity or the Black Death.
