Photogrammetry of large and small-scale terrains, outcrops and natural objects from imagery taken with digital cameras has become a valuable tool in geosciences. Collection of images can be achieved from air, sea or land, and good georeferencing make the products suitable for measurements and observations of various types. The IINH is currently deploying three aircrafts for photographing mountains while drones are used to map smaller areas. Airborne imaging in manned aircrafts and fast processing of the models was effectively implemented in the Fagradalsfjall volcanic event and the results could be delivered in near-real time to the civil protection. The talk will address these developments in 3D mapping in Iceland and discuss future improvements for more effective monitoring of active environments.
