Gustaf Arrhenius, prófessor í heimspeki við Stokkhólmsháskóla og Hlynur Orri Stefánsson, dósent í heimspeki við sama skóla, halda opinn fyrirlestur um siðfræði og loftslagsbreytingar á vegum Siðfræðistofnunar Háskóla Íslands mánudaginn 9. mars kl. 12:00 í stofu 201 í Árnagarði.

Yfirskrift fyrirlesturins er: “Climate Change, Risk, and Population Ethics” og hann fer fram á ensku.

Abstract:

The need to reduce greenhouse gas emission is by now almost universally acknowledged. But by how much should we reduce greenhouse gas emission—and how much can it cost? To properly answer this question, we need to consider some tricky philosophical issues, in particular, issues in value theory and population ethics. Taking as our starting point UN’s climate convention, we highlight two philosophical issues that must be considered before we can determine optimal greenhouse gas reduction. The first of these issues has to do with how to evaluate catastrophic risk, and, in particular, how to compare such risks to more mundane risks. The second of these issue has to do with how to compare populations of different sizes, for instance, how to compare a small population with very high average welfare with a larger population with lower average welfare.

Gustaf Arrhenius is a Professor of Practical Philosophy at Stockholm University and Director of Institute for Futures Studies. H. Orri Stefánsson is an Associate Professor of Practical Philosophy at Stockholm University, researcher at Institute for Futures Studies and Pro Futura Scientia Fellow at Swedish Collegium for Advanced Study.
