Um efni fyrirlestursins: The number of language resources available online is constantly growing. Large corpora, online dictionaries, literary editions, audio books etc. are available on the internet for everyone. Artificial intelligence and language technology are no longer only for specialists. Applications using virtual reality are become more and more popular, and many computer games use language as means of communication. Illustrations of various aspects of language and their importance are found in exhibitions in different contexts in museums all over the globe. In some countries there are language museums that present different aspects of language use and language history. At the same time, however, we see a dramatic decrease in the interest in learning other languages than English in most European countries, and in many Asian and African countries, the local languages play only a secondary role. It seems as if there is a growing lack of understanding of the power of languages and their importance for the cultural and mental wellbeing of their speakers. In this talk, I will give an overview of the many ways knowledge about languages is put into play online and offline, and suggest how the pieces could be put together to enhance the awareness about the power of languages.
