Mark Teeuwen, professor of Japanese Studies, University of Oslo, Norway

Professor Teeuwen’s field is the history of religion in Japan. Among his publications are:

A New History of Shinto (with John Breen, 2010)

A Social History of the Ise Shrines (with John Breen, 2017)

Kyoto’s Gion Festival: A Social History (2024)

Lecture: Matsuri (traditional festivals) are very complicated events, with many actors and as many competing agendas. This lecture asks how we can understand matsuri better, based on case studies of an urban and a rural matsuri.
