Um fyrirlesturinn
This paper aims to bridge the gap between development archaeology and contemporary archaeology through the case-study of Donnybrook Magdalene Laundry in Dublin, Ireland. The abandoned Magdalene Laundry in question is one of the few extant examples of these particular religious-industrial complexes that operated in Ireland until the late 1990s. These institutions confined girls and women, often against their will, where they were forced to launder and repair a range of domestic and industrial wares for various societal actors. Such a site would not normally be referred to development archaeology, due to its mundane nature and relatively recent age, but it has been archaeologically examined in various ways between 2016-2020 due to recent societal reckonings relating to institutional abuse. This paper will consider how we might expand the remit of traditional archaeological approaches commonly utilized in development archaeology when working with the recent past. It will especially consider the need to incorporate the ongoing ruination of the site and the potential to include living people in our recording.
