Um fyrirlesturinn
This research explores the role of community engagement in the management and future development of maritime heritage in Iceland. Despite the country’s deeply rooted relationship with the sea, maritime heritage, and particularly submerged sites, remains underrepresented in both research and public awareness. Drawing on international case studies, survey data and interviews, this study examines how maritime heritage is currently understood, valued, and managed, and investigates the extent to which the public is engaged with these sites. By identifying key challenges and opportunities, this research, forming a doctoral degree, aims to develop recommendations that support more inclusive and participatory approaches to maritime heritage management. Ultimately, the project seeks to highlight the importance of connecting people with maritime heritage, and to encourage greater public involvement in its preservation and interpretation.
Alex Tyas.
