Ágrip:
In many countries there are concerns about education. These are partly fuelled by the global measurement industry that tends to pitch education systems against each other on a rather narrow set of indicators. This can easily lead to a sense of panic, particularly in those countries that are not at the ‘top,’ and to polarised discussions about what ought to be done. Policy makers and politicians often argue that they need more ‘grip’ on education, and they tend to mobilise particular forms of research in order to achieve this. While the intentions may be good, the outcome is often more pressure on teachers and schools and on the children and young people they seek to serve. In my presentation I will explore these issues and dynamics, which are not unique for Iceland but can be seen around the world. Central in my exploration is the question how we understand the relationship between education and its many ‘stakeholders’ and what their responsibilities are for making sure that education can be what it ought to be. This requires that we move beyond the ‘reflex’ of asking what schools can do for society and envisage an altogether different relationship.
