Um fyrirlesturinn

The study of Roman ports has experienced an important expansion in recent decades thanks to the development of numerous (and diverse) lines of research, ranging from the study of their appearance and urban planning to the creation and transformation of port systems. Despite the evident interest of these for improving our understanding of port phenomena in the past, these new approaches share an important limitation: the study of material evidence at local or supralocal scales, a circumstance that can potentially mask broader regional dynamics. It is in this context that "Beyond ports: Movement and Connectivity in the Roman Mediterranean" (financed by the Swedish Research Council) develops. This project aims to explore the connections between ports and their regional contexts as a way of approaching the logic of occupation of Mediterranean coastal areas in Roman times. In particular, this talk will present and discuss the theoretical and methodological approaches on which "Beyond Ports" is based, specially  focussing on the development and application of integrated analysis strategies of material evidence (both archaeological and paleogeographic), deemed fundamental for ensuring a better understanding of Roman ports and their role in the integration of regions within the Roman Empire.
