Sérhæfð nýting sjófugla í Hegranesi

Grace Cesario, nýdoktor við HÍ, flytur flytur erindi í fyrirlestraröðinni Nýjar rannsóknir í fornleifafræði sem Félag fornleifafræðinga og námsbraut í fornleifafræði við Háskóla Íslands standa að. Fyrirlesturinn nefnist „Marine Resource Specialization on Hegranes: Birds“ og verður fluttur á ensku.

This presentation will discuss the use of birds at domestic sites on Hegranes, in Skagafjörður, during the Viking Age. In particular, the focus is on diving seabirds in the Alcidae family (svartfugl) which are the most common birds in the Hegranes archaeofaunal assemblages. These birds, recovered from middens, are represented by too many wing bones, and I aim to explore the potential reasons for this pattern. This pattern of too many seabird wings can also be seen in other areas of the North Atlantic in the Viking Age, suggesting that it may be a cultural pattern of bird butchery brought over with the first settlers. In addition to the Viking Age patterns of bird butchery, historical and ethnographic sources suggest the same methods have continued to be used into modern times. To highlight the unique patterns on Hegranes, I will also briefly consider two contemporaneous examples of bird body part deposition from other regions in Iceland.
