Um fyrirlesturinn

Scandinavian expansion during the Viking Age, associated with raiding, trade, and settlement, reached many regions of Europe and beyond. During their journeys, Scandinavians also reached areas located in the southern Baltic, including the Vistula River basin in the lands of present-day Poland. In my speech, I would like to present the sometimes ambiguous and difficult-to-interpret evidence of Scandinavian presence in the form of graves, hoards, and artefacts (weapons, jewellery, and other objects).

I will pay particular attention to the direct remains of Scandinavians in the Polish lands in the form of burials and discuss what information about them is provided by the latest research methods of DNA and isotope analyses. Finally, I will attempt to answer the question of why they came to these lands and what role they played there.
