Hávamál preserves a philosophy of life that has endured for more than a thousand years and still speaks to us today. In the poem, which consists of 162/4 stanzas and is placed in the mouth of Odin, he offers advice on friendship, power, wisdom, generosity, moderation, love, and the art of living wisely and well, while at the same time boasting of his knowledge and recounting his more and less successful romantic adventures.
In this lecture, Jón Viðar Sigurðsson presents his newly published book, Håvamål. En nøkkel til vikingtiden (HÁVAMÁL: A Window into the Viking Mind). Hávamál has appeared in numerous editions and translations, but Jón Viðar's book is the first to make a systematic attempt to analyse the society, values, and social worldview reflected in the poem. Rather than reading Hávamál primarily as a collection of moral maxims, the book uses the poem as a key to understanding Viking Age society, human relationships, and the ideas that shaped the everyday life, politics, and culture of the period.
In the lecture, Jón Viðar will present the book’s main findings and the approach on which it is based. Particular attention will be given to the roles of guest and host, the ambivalent image of women portrayed in the poem, and the importance of speaking about one’s emotions, the ‘soft’ Viking.
Jón Viðar Sigurðsson is Professor of Medieval History at the University of Oslo. He has published numerous books and scholarly articles on the history of the Nordic countries in the Middle Ages. His research focuses primarily on the period from around 800 to 1400 and encompasses political, cultural, ecclesiastical, and religious history. In recent years, his work has concentrated especially on the society of the Viking Age.
